POINTS SPORTS HEALTH INTRODUCES "DOCTOR OF THE MONTH" AWARD

(Morristown, NJ, March 31, 2011) – Points Sports Health (PSH, http://www.pointssports.com/) has introduced its “Doctor of the Month” award to acknowledge distinguished members of the medical community who have demonstrated commitment and outstanding service in sports medicine. The inaugural recipient is Dr. Timothy Hosea of University Orthopaedic Associates in New Jersey; Dr. Hosea is a respected orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty certification in orthpaedic sports medicine.

Sports medicine is a complex subspecialty that requires strict and rigorous education and certification, which may not always be evident to the average health care consumer. Through this new monthly recognition, PSH looks to help people find the best sports medicine care by identifying the nation’s top practitioners in the field.

“We feel it is necessary to recognize the sports medicine physicians who have offered exceptional sports medicine services over many years and made valuable contributions to the sports community,” says Points Sports Health CEO Thomas Hofstetter. “We’re pleased to have Dr. Hosea be our first recipient.”

Awardees are selected by a special PSH committee, comprised of PSH management and PSH Advisory Board members. Each receives a plaque and is spotlighted through a profile which will be featured online, in the monthly PSH newsletter and through PSH partner channels.

PHYSICIANS GIVE SUPPORT IN LARGE DOSES  TO
SOMERSET MEDICAL CENTER’S CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Somerville, 2004—For Kathleen Toomey, M.D., an oncologist affiliated with Somerset Medical Center, rallying financial support from her fellow physicians for the hospital’s “Breaking New Ground” capital campaign was easy. Dr. Toomey was a member of a specially-appointed committee to reach out to Somerset Medical Center’s medical and dental staff.
“The doctors already knew how great a place the medical center is for both physicians and patients,” says Dr. Toomey, who also serves as Co-chair of Somerset Medical Center’s Cancer Committee, Chair of its Institutional Review Board, and Medical Director of Somerset Valley Visiting Nurse Hospice at Somerset Medical Center. “The physicians here, along with the employees and administrators, are an extremely philanthropic community. The gifts have been very generous.”
So generous, in fact, that the doctors have donated more than $2.2 million to the campaign to date — the largest contribution ever from a New Jersey hospital’s medical staff. This extraordinary support includes individual gifts of $25,000 and up and contributions as much as $1 million from physician groups.
“We took a very personal approach with colleagues,” Dr. Toomey says. “Many of our meetings were in the morning over coffee in the hospital’s coffee shop.”
“Breaking New Ground” is the largest fund-raising campaign in Somerset Medical Center’s 104-year history. The money will be used for a major expansion project that will include a new emergency department, inpatient oncology and medical/surgical pavilions and new ambulatory surgery facilities.
According to Dr. Toomey, the new inpatient oncology unit in her area will offer a host of amenities for patients as well as physicians. Patients will benefit from all private rooms furnished with flat-screen televisions, refrigerators, laptop capability and overnight accommodations for their families. For physicians, more meeting rooms, additional computers and an updated health information technology system will increase efficiency and enhance communication. “We’re moving toward a paperless system, so this facility renovation is critical. Our architecture will match our technology and we’ll be ahead of state of the art,” attests Dr. Toomey.
“The physicians at Somerset Medical Center have overwhelmingly demonstrated their support,” notes John Von Stade, Chairman of Somerset Medical Center Foundation. “Our medical staff’s participation has been vital to the campaign’s success and because of their philanthropy and the generosity of other caring individuals, we will continue to meet the region’s growing health care needs.”
Why is it important for the medical center’s doctors to be involved with development initiatives in addition to delivering care? “This is our community,” says Dr. Toomey. “We identify so much with Somerset, especially as a place to go to when our own families need care.”

MORRISTOWN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL RECEIVES "TOP 10" HONOR

Morristown, 2002—Atlantic’s Morristown Memorial Hospital has been ranked among the top 10 cardiovascular-surgery hospitals in the country by Consumer’s Checkbook/ The Center for the Study of Services, an independent, nonprofit organization founded in part with funding from the United States Office of Consumer Affairs. The standing, cited in the May/June 2002 issue of AARP’s Modern Maturity magazine, is based on mortality rates, physician ratings and overall performance score as determined by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The accolade follows two previous acknowledgements of Morristown Memorial’s leadership in cardiovascular surgery, both listing the hospital among the top 100 cardiovascular institutions in the country. The hospital also has placed significantly below New Jersey’s statewide average mortality rate for cardiovascular surgery for four out of the past five years. In fact, according to the Cardiac Surgery Report Card, issued annually by the New Jersey Department of Health, Morristown Memorial’s mortality rate in 2001 was 1.2%, among the lowest in the state.
“This is quite an honor,” said Grant Parr, M.D., Chair, Cardiovascular Surgery, Atlantic Health System, of the Consumer’s Checkbook classification. “We’ve had very good results. I think that we have a wonderful care system here at Morristown Memorial, including an exceptional group of board-certified surgeons and superb nursing personnel.”
Atlantic Health System performs more cardiac surgery procedures than any other hospital system in New Jersey, with Morristown Memorial accounting for more than 1,600 each year. Along with its sister institution, The General Hospital Center at Passaic, the first New Jersey hospital to do open-heart surgery in 1959, Morristown Memorial offers a comprehensive program of cardiac services. In addition to open-heart surgery, the hospital provides valve replacement and repair, major aortic surgery, adult congenital heart disease repair, minimally invasive coronary surgery, arrhythmia surgery, stenting, angioplasty, catheterization, ICD implants, eletrophysiology, telemetry and pacemaker services.
Non-invasive diagnostics, vascular imaging, inpatient cardiac rehabilitation and clinical research also are conducted. The hospital features the Center for Cardiovascular Disease, the Cardiac Health Center promoting prevention and wellness, the School of Cardiovascular Technology and patient units for cardiac care, cardiac intensive care, cardiovascular surgery care and open heart surgery recovery.
“When you look at the number of surgeries we do every year, our experience speaks for itself and is reflected in our survival rates,” adds Dr. Parr. “This experience, combined with our patient management protocols, relate directly to our outstanding results and high patient satisfaction.”
In looking toward the future of cardiovascular surgery at Morristown Memorial, Dr. Parr says, “We strive to continually improve and are in the process of further enhancing our cardiovascular surgery service.”
